Teaching with Technology

Bud Hunt gently suggests that If You Need a Plan B, Maybe Just Go With That Instead.

Newbery/Caldecott/Printz Award Season

Betsy Bird’s Newbery and Caldecott predictions post is always worth a read.

The Calling Caldecott blog has been busily compiling lists of contenders. This post links you to the three lists and includes extensive comments with yet more suggestions for reading.

Someday My Printz Will Come makes the case for This One Summer as Printz material. It’s one of my favorite YA reads of the year, so I’m fully on board.

Also good fodder if you want to be sure you’ve read the 2015 Caldecott books: Huffington Post’s 50 New Picture Books for Fall.

The Reading Life

One of my favorite reads of the week was Laura Jimenez’s post for The Nerdy Book Club on competitive reading and coming to terms with our own very individual, very personal reading lives.

Author and illustrator Jerry Craft is a former reluctant reader who now writes books that he hopes will reach other reluctant readers.

Abby the Librarian argues in favor of rereading.

The slightly (and not so slightly) OCD will appreciate this spreadsheet for tracking your reading.

Writing

Jenny Diski’s powerfully moving piece on being diagnosed with inoperable cancer is ultimately a meditation on why we write.
