Sunday Salon: A Round-Up of Online Reading

Sunday Salon

The Reading Life

Austin Kleon writes a reading manifesto of sorts, 33 Thoughts on Reading.

Sarah Hannah Gomez commits to using her book purchasing power to support diverse books. I love this idea. And she also makes a really important point about how kids need to see diverse characters and stories in popular culture too–not just in important, literary books.

This is one for my mom, who has read only women writers for, like, 25 years: Alexander Chee read only women writers for three years.

The Writing Life

Linda Johns explains why she signs up for NaNoWriMo even though she never makes the 50K.

Terrific post from one of my favorite writers, Linda Urban, about how she uses freewrites and quickwrites in her writing practice–and she includes some awesome resources and ideas from one of my favorite creativity/writing teachers, Lynda Barry.

Children’s Literature

Mr Schu shares his favorite books of 2014.

Kelsey Empfield summarizes her experiences at the Plum Creek Literacy Festival.

As you knew I would, I LOVED the essay by Alexander Chee!! He articulated my personal manifesto about reading women so much better than I have ever managed to do. Thanks for including this!

So glad you liked that essay! Only you did realize it was written by a man, right?!
