I’m In!: A Picture Book and a Poem a Day #Nerdlution15

I love reading about other people’s resolutions, goals, one little words, and #nerdlutions, but–except for reading resolutions–I’m not really a resolutions kind of person. I did join #nerdlution14 last year and had a wonderful time reading a poem a day, so I’m not sure why I was trying to resist #nerdlution15. But I was fully in resistance mode. Not for me, I decided, not this time.

Then I saw this tweet from Laura Purdie Salas:

And I thought about how reading several picture books every day used to be automatic for me. My son and I read at least two and usually more. And then came that most sad day in October when he told me he didn’t want to read picture books anymore. “It’s time for me to grow up.”

He actually said those words! “It’s time for me to grow up.”

I’m inserting a pause in my blog post right here so that all of my readers can share a moment of silent mourning with me.

I fully plan to bring him back into the picture #booklove fold at some point, but for now, I am trying to respect his wishes and only read longer chapter books with him.

My own picture book reading decreased dramatically in the last third of the year. Now I’m reading 3-4 picture books a week on average, and I’d like to read more.

And then I read Julieanne’s post about her #nerdlution15, a word a day. There is something so elegant and serendipitous about looking for a word each day and then taking five minutes to write it. I hope she will post many of her five-minute writings on her blog so that I can reflect and be inspired too!

After reading Julieanne’s post, I decided I was in. And I would commit to a picture book a day.

And then I thought about how much I liked reading a poem a day for my #nerdlution last year and how once I was no longer nerdlutioning, I slowly stopped reading poetry.

And that’s how my double #nerdlution15 was born:

1. Read a picture book a day.

2. Read a poem a day.

It also helped that I happened to do both of these things on January 1 and 2, so I am fully caught up and on schedule.

It’s not too late to join the Nerdlution: check out Franki’s post explaining #nerdlution15 and find inspiration on Twitter searching for the #nerdlution15 hashtag.

Love both of these goals! We are starting our poetry unit this month with the kids, so I will already be surrounded by poetry too. Fun! (During the course of the unit I ‘hide’ different poems around the room each day. It’s so fun to see kids racing into the class just to discover new poems!)
