Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish. This week’s topic? Auto-buy authors! And I have many more than 10. I decided to narrow the list by choosing only authors I pre-order. And still ended up with eleven.
Very little makes me happier than a new Elephant & Piggie book, and thankfully Mo Willems seems happy to oblige with 1-2 new titles a year. But a new Knuffle Bunny or Pigeon is also cause for celebration (and pre-ordering).
Laura Lee Gulledge’s Page by Paige is my go-to graphic novel for English majors new to the format. And her sophomore effort, Will & Whit, is just as good. Now if only she’d publish a new graphic novel I could pre-order!
A new Yuyi Morales book is cause for serious celebration. I know the art will push boundaries and the story will resonate.
No one builds a world as richly or writes a sentence as lushly as Laini Taylor.
Somehow I find a reason to include The Story of Fish & Snail in every Top Ten list I write. It’s that good. On the strength of my love for that one title, Deborah Freedman is a forever pre-order author for me.
I fell hard for Jason Reynolds when I read My Name Is Jason. Mine too, a collection of poetry and paintings by Reynolds and his friend, Jason Griffin, and his brilliant debut novel, When I Was the Greatest (best book cover ever!), only cemented my love.
Megan Whalen Turner wrote my most very favorite series of all time starring my most very favorite hero of all time, Eugenides, The Queen’s Thief. Until she publishes more books, I’ll just reread The Thief series every couple of years or so.
Jacqueline Woodson is brilliant whether she’s writing picture books or middle grade fiction or verse memoirs.
Gene Luen Yang constantly does fresh and interesting things with the graphic novel format. I very nearly assigned three of his books in my new Graphic Novels course.
Rebecca Stead’s middle-grade fiction is clever and thought-provoking and features characters who remind me of me when I was that age. Plus, she’s really nice.
Raina Telgemeier’s graphic nvoels are easy sells in all of my courses. Her books tend to convince even readers who think they don’t like graphic novels that they actually do.
