Top Ten Tuesday: 10 Wishes I’d Ask the Book Genie to Grant Me

toptentuesday2

Top Ten Tuesday is a bookish meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish.

Wish #1: An unlimited book budget. This is everyone’s #1 wish, right? Sometimes when I see my credit card bill, it’s clear that I already think I live with an unlimited book-buying budget. But I really don’t.

Wish #2: Unlimited shelf space. It doesn’t matter how many bookshelves I beg, borrow, or steal, I never have enough. See the problem created by Wish #1.

Wish #3: Younger eyes. We don’t have to go crazy here. Even 40-year-old eyes would be fine. But these 43-year-old eyes have started to seriously struggle with smaller print, and reading simply isn’t as comfortable and easy as it has been all of my life.

Wish #4: Another book series my son will love as much as Christopher Healy’s Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom. Over a year after finishing these books, he still talks about Duncan and Gustav. A book series that a reluctant reader settles into and lives in, characters and stories that feel more real than real life… what a gift that is. I really hope I never meet Christopher Healy because I’d probably burst into tears and cry all over him in gratitude.

Wish #5: Self-organizing bookshelves so that I can always put my hands on the book I’m looking for. When I was younger, I had a photographic memory for my book collection. Now? Not so much. Half the time, I can’t even remember if I actually OWN the book I’m looking for or if I just intended to buy it. (Given my confession in Wish #1, chances are good that I DO own it). Finding it on the shelf is a near impossibility. Sometimes I can’t even decide which STATE it’s in (since I live in South Dakota and work in Nebraska). If only my books could organize themselves according to my ever-changing interest in reading them.

Wish #6: A new Megan Whalen Turner novel about my favorite fictional character, Eugenides. Supposedly there will be two more novels in the series, and I. Cannot. Wait.

Wish #7: A big city public library in my small town. This is the only thing I don’t like about living in Western South Dakota. Limited access to books. If I could just pick up the Denver Public Library (one of my favorite libraries in one of my favorite buildings, and throw in my favorite public sculpture too while you’re at it, ok?) and move it to Hot Springs, that’d be AWESOME.

Wish #8: A dedicated children’s bookstore within easy driving distance. This doesn’t even need any explanation.

Wish #9: A book about writing by Laini Taylor. Taylor is so incredibly inspiring talking about her writing process, and she sporadically publishes brilliant writing advice at her blog and at Not for Robots, a website about writing that she no longer updates. She should collect it all and add some more.

Wish #10: A wrinkle in time. Wait. An Internet-free wrinkle in time. I’d like to have an extra hour added to each day just for reading, but it’s going to have to be an hour that other people don’t have because I won’t be able to take advantage of this extra hour if I have to think about my responsibilities to other people. Maybe what I really need is Hermione’s time turner? Then other people can just go about their regular lives while I squeeze in that extra hour. Or two.

HAPPY TTT! I love your list, and I love that you share your wishes with books for your son! Have a good one!

Ha ha — my almost-40-year-old eyes are having issues, too! I get headaches and blurry vision if I spend too long staring at a book. Boo hoo. This never used to happen.

    Happy TTT!

Oh man, self organizing books would be freaking phenomenal! That would make life so much easier 🙂

I like your joke about a Wrinkle in Time. Boy, could I use that as well! I definitely wish we had a bigger library. The non-fiction Newbery award winners are pretty scarce and few and far between in our little Chadron library.

They are having book fair at my school this week, and my husband has already said I am not allowed to go and that I must borrow any other books I read this semester. Oh how I long for your #1!….and #2…and #5…and #7…

I have 62 year old eyes, so I really really get wish number 1! Maybe your son will get into Darren Shan’s Cirque Du Freak series. (It’s what hooks many of my readers) I haven’t read one of them, but readers convince each other to have a go at them, and they are hooked. Since I’m suggesting it to an adult, I guess this means I’ll have to read one to see what they are about.

I absolutely agree with an unlimited book budget!! I wish I had a larger book collection but with being a broke college student it’s hard to afford all the books I want. The library helps me out quite a bit. I also love your #8 idea I feel like that would be very doable.

An extra hour AND the sculpture? Bookish perfection 🙂
