Top Ten Tuesday: 10 Characters I’d Love to Revisit as Adults

This week’s Top Ten list has me revisiting childhood favorites and more recent favorites to consider characters I’d like to meet in books as adults.

Albert from Bread and Jam for Frances. Albert had to grow up to be a chef or a food blogger, right? This book features some of my favorite food writing of all time. “I like to have a good lunch,” Albert says. So do I, Albert. Preferably while also reading about a good lunch.

Hermione Granger. Because I would have liked these books even more if the title had been Hermione Granger and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Hermione should grow up to be in charge of the world.

Ramona Quimby. I think she grew up to be an elementary teacher. Don’t you think that would be the right kind of karma?

Paige’s journey as an artist is just beginning at the end of Page by Paige, one of my favorite graphic novels. I’d love to see her in her early 20s, just finished with college, trying out different paths and different lives.

I’ve decided that Jacqueline Woodson should write at least two more verse memoirs of her life.

Indigo’s Star is probably my favorite novel in Hilary McKay’s wonderful series about the Casson family, and Indigo deserves another book!

Cassandra Mortmain must grow up to be a novelist, yes? Smith writes about being 17 with such tenderness and poignancy. I wonder how she would have tackled another “on the cusp” kind of year. Cassandra at 29 perhaps?

If Alexie finishes the book he mentioned at NCTE a couple of years ago, I’ll get my wish: a book about Rowdy! Only I’d like to see Rowdy as a high school senior, Rowdy with a little bit of hope, but Rowdy still depicted realistically. Junior gets out. We know Junior is going to get out. But what about Rowdy??

I definitely want to read about Ali and his friends enrolled in college and out in the working world.

Aren’t you curious to know what David’s kids will be like? I’d love to see David as a parent.
