This week, I fell down a new Internet rabbit hole: the world of art journaling! Mindful Art Studio’s How to Start an Art Journal has been a helpful place to begin.
Also, art journaling as self-care? Yes! See also simple drawing techniques for anxiety. I can vouch for those circles!
Balzer Designs examines art journal pages she finds inspiring and explores the question of What Does Inspiration Mean? (Interesting post for writing teachers to read as well, since often we read in part for inspiration in our own writing.)
I haven’t had the best of luck lately completing creative challenges I’ve set for myself, but I have high hopes for Daisy Yellow’s Index Card-a-Day, which starts June 1.
Making reading more relaxing and less like work is always a goal. I love these ideas for Building a Relaxing Reading List from Book Riot.
I love what Allison Marchetti and Rebekah O’Dell say about finding their tribe in this article, What Teachers Wish They Had Been Told.
I don’t actually like to travel that much, but I love having traveled–I love the being home and remembering my travels part of traveling. For about five seconds after reading this article, I decided that my family should be like Jessica Gee’s and become full-time travelers. Then I came to my senses.
I also love podcasts. This week, I’m especially loving Radiolab’s piece on French figure skater Surya Bonaly. This show sent me (and every other listener) straight to Youtube to watch Surya’s incredible, insane back flip landing on one leg.
I also got a lot out of Freakanomics’s piece, How to Become Great at Just About Anything.

Okay, I am intrigued by Index-Card-A-Day. You find the best stuff, I swear.

Hi Elisabeth! It’s Amy from Mindful Art Studio. Thank you SO much for sharing the links on art journaling and creative self-care. Art journaling can be such an easy, non-threatening way to draw out, paint out, vent out your feelings if you let it. Here’s an extra tip: divide your paper into a grid of squares and experiment with painting little bubbles lots of different ways in each one. It’s a variation on the drawing circles theme. It’s also an easy way to cover a full page. When you step back, you’ll be amazed at what you see!
Also, I love the links for Balzer Designs and Daisy Yellow’s index card a day. That’s another WONDERFUL way of breaking things down and making them non-threatening!
Happy Creating!
Amy
