2017 was another strong year for picture books. As I compiled my top 10 list, I realized that there’s nothing that I’m quite as passionate about as I was about my top two picture books from 2016, They All Saw a Cat and Radiant Child, though Town Is by the Sea comes close. But still. There were plenty of books that I loved, and it was hard to choose just 17 to highlight for the year. (And thanks to Carrie Gelson and Alyson Beecher for the inspiration to choose 17 favorites! So much more fun than choosing just 10.)

Love The Antlered Ship, Her Right Foot, and After the Fall. Town is by the Sea was never at my bookstore. Ordered. Language of A Different Pond is beautiful. I’d include Wolf in the Snow (my favorite) and Lines.

I still haven’t seen Lines–waiting for it to come in. I thought long and hard about Wolf in the Snow but it hasn’t stuck with me in the way that others have. I’ll revisit before Caldecott time, though. Sometimes that second read reveals a whole new book to me. Town Is by the Sea is one I read aloud to my Methods class and their freewriting after was some of the best all semester. Everyone was inspired by the images and language.

I haven’t read any of these and shall search for all! Are you doing a top 17 “adult” books too? I get some of my best reads from your yearly list. 🙂

Hi, Elisabeth! I love your list. I’ve read a good number of these, and have several more on my TBR list. I wasn’t that interested in Town is By the Sea– but you and Carrie have convinced me to read that one! I loved Grand Canyon– Chin is one of my favorite author/illustrators. I also loved After the Fall.
Hoping your 2018 is filled with good times and happy reading!
