Garden Faux Fibonacci #NaPoWriMo18 #NPM2018

tumbleweed by lisa risager

Weedy
takeover
once beautiful
garden, now wild.
The gardener stands, paralyzed, overwhelmed,
on a soft pale green carpet of tumbleweed.

Notes: I’m calling this a faux Fibonacci because it was intended to be a Fibonacci poem–only I wrote down the requirements incorrectly in my notebook. A Fibonacci is a poem of six lines with a syllable count based on the Fibonacci number sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8. In my notebook, I wrote that a Fibonacci was based on the number of words per line, not syllables, and didn’t discover my mistake until I was ready to publish this. So. A faux Fibonacci it is. And yes, I am the gardener, and my once beautiful garden really is a carpet of tumbleweed, which is quite soft and lovely when it’s half an inch tall. Then it grows up into that thing in the photo.

I see the weedy garden beast growing–literally–in this poem. Love the picture.

I should have just taken my own photo of my “garden” but it’s too horrifying!

I am paralyzed by the horse tail in my garden. It is even worse than buttercup, and that is saying a lot!

I’m glad I’m not the only one who is paralyzed. I managed to get one bed cleared, but it was the smallest one and by far the least weedy (with no tumbleweed at all!) and it still took 2.5 hours. When I look at the rest of the garden, I just want to cry! Or hire somebody else…

I like how the form – the wildly growing Fibonacci numbers – mimic the subject. Good luck taming that beast!

I hadn’t even noticed that, but that is a cool feature of this particular form–and makes it very well suited to certain subjects. Thanks for helping me see what I’d written in a different light!
