#MustReadin2019: The List

I’ve been participating in Carrie Gelson’s #MustReadin2019 Reading Challenge since 2014. I’ll let Carrie explain the purpose and spirit of this challenge:

For anyone out there with a To Be Read list that seems like it will never end, this challenge is for you! This is all about making your own personal list of books that you want to commit to reading in 2019.

These aren’t the only titles you will read over the year, but a list to help guide your reading. A list to lure you back to a reading path you have set for yourself. Many, many new books will tempt you! Go ahead and read them but having a list like this ensures you will not forget some titles you were determined to read. That’s the intention and spirit of this challenge.

What I love about #MustRead is that there’s no need for reader guilt if you don’t finish your list, and that’s a good thing, because I don’t think I’ve ever finished one of mine. But it does give me inspiration throughout the year and a very strong structure and focus during the last week of the year as I frantically read as many books as I can to try to finish my list!

For the past two years, I’ve posted my list last because it’s completely crowdsourced from the other #MustRead lists. I select one title from each person’s list to compile my own. It’s so much fun to check out the lists as they’re published and select the book I want to read.

I have three rules. No rereads. I only choose one book per list, even when there are five or six I’m DYING to read. And no substitutions except in the case of series titles. If I decide to include a series title on my #MustRead list, I do allow myself to substitute the first book in the series if it’s new to me.

I like to create diverse #MustRead lists to remind me throughout the year of my goal to read #ownvoices titles. It was so easy this year to create a diverse list because there was such a range of voices included on the #MustRead lists. Although it would be easy to populate my #MustRead list with all middle-grade novels or picture books, I try to include a variety of genres and formats as well. Over the past couple of years, I’ve also been reading and enjoying more books for grownups, and I was glad to be able to include a few of those on the list too.

I think this every year, but this is definitely the best #MustRead list I’ve ever put together, and I have the whole wonderful #MustRead community to thank for that!

“A Man Called Ove” is so good. I love all of Fredrik Backman’s books. “My Grandmother asked me to tell you she’s Sorry” is also very good. “Becoming” was tied with “Educated” for the best book I read this year. I kept tearing up and putting it down for a day several times before I finished. Kyle laughed at me. Then he read it and said it was making him sad too! It’s not really a sad book. We just miss the Obamas.

I tear up every time I see an Obama tweet. We miss you, Barack! I really liked Educated this year too, though I ultimately didn’t include it on my year end round up list. I had other titles I wanted to focus on a little more. I haven’t read any Backman, but he’s mentioned A LOT on the Modern Mrs Darcy podcast, which is my favorite bookish podcast. I miss you and Kyle!!!

Brilliant, as usual. Love how you do this! I have already dived in to Harbor Me and can’t wait to wake up early tomorrow a.m. to try to finish it! The list making is so much fun! Your process must be especially enjoyable!

It’s such a treat! I’m pretty sure I account singlehandedly for 1000 views of your #MustRead round-up post because I keep checking back to see if any new lists have been added. I’ve already started A Very Large Expanse of Sea and Pride–both excellent so far!

Mary’s Monster was one of my favorite books of 2018. I knew very little about Mary Shelley. I had also read very few books in verse. Of course, Anne Ursu’s The Lost Girl is also on my 2019 must-read list. I love how you admitted that you don’t think you’ve ever finished one of your lists. Good to know I’m in excellent company. I often feel guilty when I haven’t finished the books on mine.

I used to feel guilty about not finishing, but then realized that the real pleasure for me is in making the list. Then I like to read mostly pushed along by serendipity throughout the year! I went through a period of being obsessed with the Shelleys when I was 16 or 17 and read several biographies. I really like verse novels and need to read more of them!

What’s the full title of the purple book in the second row under Homecoming?

That is We Got This by Cornelius Minor, a PD book. This question reminds me that I meant to make a list of all titles and authors too since I noticed some of this were cut off on the collage image.

I’ve been reading your posts about reading and adding to my TBR list. I absolutely loved Homegoing. And at the moment, I’m about to finish Becoming, a great antidote to the current state of affairs. Happy reading, my friend!

You have some wonderful titles on your list! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Harbor Me. I have had A Man Called Ove on my list forever, so maybe this will be my year to get to it, too. 🙂

Thanks to Shaye, I was reminded that I never returned to read your list. Some I’ve read and loved, like Harbor Me, some are not on my list, but I want to read, have had forever, like A Man Called Ove. But no matter, it looks as if you’re going to have a grand year of reading!

The problem with reading other people MustRead lists is that I end up second guessing my own list and see titles that I wish were on mine. I have actually started a MustReadin2020 list….
From what I have read on your list here it seems like you will be reading some amazing books!
Homegoing is on my list this year too. I’ve owned the book for ages but just never got to it… It will be interesting to compare our thinking on it.
